Dahlia Dividing Workshop at Fleurs de Lyonville
Join us on the farm for an afternoon all about dahlias — and learn everything you need to know to grow your own abundant, organic blooms. We’ll cover how to dig, divide, store and care for your dahlias, and you’ll head home with a collection of 10 tubers to start your very own patch. Suitable for gardeners of all skill levels.
Time: 1pm to 4.30pm (ish)
Date: Saturday 15 August 2026
Chris and Janae have been growing dahlias since they first started their flower farm in 2016, and they’re thrilled to offer their dahlia dividing workshop again this winter — where you’ll go home with a collection of 10 different tubers for your own garden! Each person will dig and divide a clump of dahlia tubers while learning everything they need to know about dahlias and meeting fellow dahlia lovers. There’ll be hot drinks to keep everyone warm, along with Chris’ famous pumpkin pie and other goodies to keep us going.
Chris and Janae will explain everything you need to know to grow your own healthy dahlia patch, from the very beginning right through to planting and caring for your blooms. We’ll start with how to dig the dahlias, wash them, find the “eye,” divide the tubers, and which tools we like to use. We’ll also cover storing your dahlias so they stay healthy through winter, when to plant them for your climate, how we plant them, what we feed them for healthy blooms, what “pinching out” means and why we do it, and finally how to enjoy your dahlias in your home.
To overwinter, or to lift and divide?
One of the questions we get asked most is whether you really need to dig your dahlias up at all. “Overwintering” (also called perennialising) means leaving your tubers in the ground over winter rather than lifting them out. We’ll teach you how to do it, weigh up the pros and cons, and help you work out whether it’s the right approach for your own garden and climate.
We’ll finish the workshop with a tour around our working flower farm, with plenty of time to ask as many questions as you like along the way. Chris and Janae are now in their 11th growing season, growing over 50 varieties of flowers on the farm.
Workshops run on our farm in Lyonville. A week before the workshop, a reminder email will be sent with final instructions, information and a request for any dietary requirements.
